I Keep Doing the Same Thing, Why?

Hard to believe that anyone would think of Jesus doing something wrong. Or even consider He would be on the side of evil. But some of the people in today’s gospel thought just that. They thought Jesus could drive out demons because He was using the power of Beelzebul. Then to verify their supposition they asked Jesus for a sign from heaven.

Trick question. If they thought He used the power of Beelzebul to drive out demons then Jesus would not be able to work a sign from heaven. Jesus knew their hearts. If He could not work a sign from heaven, then Jesus was working with Beelzebul. If He did work a sign from heaven, then they have tricked Him into serving them. Not very clever.

I wonder just how clever are we? Do you ever get frustrated with confession? You go to confession to have the demons driven out. God forgives you and challenges you to make a change heart. Four or six weeks later you are back declaring the same old same old. I keep doing the same things all the time. Well, you are coming to Jesus to have the demons driven out, but are you trying to trick Jesus asking for a sign? Just like in the gospel, you will not receive a sign. You are allowing the demon back into the house of your heart. Jesus is allowing you to make the change of heart. With the graces of the sacrament of confession, prayer, and relying on Jesus you will eventually overcome those demons. Trust in the Lord.

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
