When The Spirit Leaves

We can be having just a great day when suddenly, something triggers an undesirable response in your heart. Maybe someone receives praise that you think is unjustified. Or another wins a great prize or a reward. What has replaced the spirit of love in your heart is the spirit of evil: anger, greed, envy, or lust.

Rather than focusing on others you turn inward to only see what you want, what you desire, what you crave. Jealousy invades not only your heart but consumes all of you. It is remarkable how quickly we can replace love with any number of other sins. Saul’s hatred of David will eventually consume him and be the downfall of his family. Saul will even turn away from God. Most certainly the spirit of the Lord has left Saul.

Notice in the gospel Jesus is expelling the evil spirits. As they come forth from their victims, they announce the true identity of Jesus: The Son of God. Jesus rebukes the evil spirits but forgives those around Him. His focus is on the people around them and what they truly need, the spirit of God in them.

When the seven deadly sins creep into your heart turn to God. He will cast them out. Invite the Holy Spirit into your heart. Ask Him to guide you in this life. Allow the Holy Spirit to cast out the demons in your life.

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen
