Trust God not government

By Deacon Rod Knight

I recently saw a shirt that simply said, “Trust God not government”. I have spent almost a week at home as a self-appointed prisoner to recover from and avoid spreading illness. I have watched the news; we should call it the “bad news”. It seems to have the desire to cause division, enflame emotions, and wreak havoc.

Renee Nicole Good was killed in a confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She is being portrayed as a mother of three, award winning poet, extremely compassionate and as a domestic terrorist. Depending on one’s point of view.

Keep in mind, emotions are like little children; we don’t let them drive the car, but we don’t lock them in the trunk either. The reality is she is dead. Her children are hurt, her parents are hurt, her significant other is hurt. The officer who shot her and his family are hurt. You cannot un-squeeze the trigger, and you only have seconds to decide. The community is hurt and our nation is hurt. Our politicians have not let a tragedy go to waste, inflammatory remarks such as “gestapo or nazi’s” are some of the more extreme, but from both sides of the aisle.

1 Corinthians says, “that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose”. Remember a house divided cannot stand. “There are rivalries among you. I mean that each of you is saying, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?” Even as Christians we disagree. We can and we do.

I was listening to Father Daniel Reehil, Priest and Exorcist, who asked the question why was/is Jesus Christ so hated? The answer he got was “I don’t know and I don’t care”. Father Reehil said that was the correct answer, ignorance (I don’t know) and apathy (I don’t care). Who are we following?

In the Gospel Jesus told Simon (Peter) and Andrew to follow him, along with the sons of thunder, John and James.

They knew who Jesus was. Today many people are lost and do not know who Jesus is and are looking to find their purpose.

They are following political figures, celebrities, or even extremist organizations. Remember that we will know them by their fruit. Where do we see Jesus in them, their actions, or in the situation. Satan is not hiding and spiritual warfare seems to be at an all-time high, and we need to recognize it for what it is, a battle for souls. Let the “Good News” be the counter for the “bad news”. Remind ourselves of the human dignity that God has given all of us. We need to hold our elected officials accountable. We need to build bridges as opposed to walls.

Pick up our rosaries and pray to the Blessed Virgin Mother to intercede for peace, unity, and healing of our nation and to return it to being, One Nation under God. TRUST GOD not government, it is His kingdom that is eternal.
