Remembering the Fallen on Memorial Day

By Hannah Zabel

As we approach Memorial Day, we pause as a parish community to honor and remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. This national holiday, often associated with the beginning of summer, is rooted in solemn remembrance—a time to pray for those who laid down their lives so that others might live in freedom and peace.

For us as Catholics, Memorial Day is not only a civic observance but a sacred moment to intercede for the souls of the departed. We believe in the power of prayer for the dead, and so we commend these heroes to God’s eternal mercy. May their courage and selflessness be an example to us all, and may their families find peace in the knowledge that their loved ones are remembered with gratitude and reverence.

We’re honored to once again celebrate a Memorial Day Mass this year. Join us on Monday, May 26 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Cemetery in Rice Lake as we remember and pray for the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. All are welcome for this special Mass!

In the words of Jesus, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Those we honor on Memorial Day embody this Gospel truth in a profound and literal way. Let us thank God for their witness, and let us never take for granted the freedoms we enjoy because of their sacrifice.

Please take a moment this Memorial Day to offer a prayer for the fallen and for peace in our world. If you are able, attend Mass or visit a cemetery to pray for the souls of the departed. May our hearts always remain grateful, and may our lives reflect the values they died defending.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
