New Beginnings in Christ: Making Spiritual Resolutions That Last
By Krystal Montgomery & Roland Flasch
As we step into a new year, we naturally think about beginnings… fresh starts, renewed energy, and the hope that our life could be better than it was last year. The Church reminds us that the greatest “new beginning” is not tied to a date on a calendar but to a Person: Jesus Christ, who makes all things new.
St. Paul tells us, “So whoever is in Christ, is a new creation” (2 Cor 5:17). This is not simply poetic language; it is a real transformation God desires for every one of us.
A new year is a graced moment to ask: What new creation is Christ inviting me to become? Rather than relying on willpower alone, we turn to grace trusting that God has already planted seeds of renewal within us. Our role is to cooperate, to open space in our lives for Christ to act.
This is where spiritual resolutions take on meaning. Unlike ordinary resolutions often centered on productivity or self-improvement, spiritual resolutions are rooted in relationship. They are invitations to grow in holiness, not for our glory, but for God’s. They aren’t burdens but pathways that allow Christ to shape us more fully into His image.
Perhaps the Lord is nudging you to deepen your prayer life: setting aside even five quiet minutes each morning to check in with Him. Maybe He is calling you to return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation more regularly, or to participate in daily Mass once a week. You might feel drawn to pray with Scripture, begin a nightly examen, or foster a habit of gratitude, thanking Him for His blessings each day. Small commitments, done with faithfulness, open the door to profound renewal.
Above all, spiritual resolutions should lead us closer to the heart of Jesus, who welcomes us at every moment with mercy and hope. As we enter this new year, let us ask for the grace to let go of what holds us back and to embrace the transforming love Christ offers. In Him, every day becomes the chance to begin again.
Lord, make this year a time of renewal in You. Create a new heart in us and help us walk faithfully in Your love.
