Sins of the Heart
Thinking of going to confession? Today’s gospel gives us a good examination of the sins of the heart. They are:
“From within the man, from his heart, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.”
In this time of COVID we are all learning to wash our hands more often. The suggested length of time for washing is about the time it takes to say an Our Father or two Hail Mary’s. The more we wash our hands the better we get at it. That is human nature for almost anything. The more we do it the better we get.
Unfortunately, it works both ways. The more we sin the better we get at sinning, too. Confession is the washing we need in our lives. Getting into the habit of say once a month helps to recognize sin and the near occasions of sin. Receiving the graces from the sacrament strengthens us to enter into that spiritual battle to fight sin and learn to resist its temptations.
Lent is one week away. Plan now what you are willing to give up for Lent. Here is a thought. God really does not want the chocolate you give up. He really does not need the beer or coffee. Take this to prayer. What in your life is taking your time away from God?
May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
