August 13, 2023 – Reflection

August 13, 2023 Reflection by Fr. Adam

“Behold the lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.”

The indication of the mass is sometimes a wake-up call in the middle of the mass.  Wake up and see who it is that in front of you, the Lord Jesus who was been called to save us from our sins, the same body that suffered on the cross is in front of us.

This invitation pivots around a Greek term, called anamnesis, or a living remembrance.  Anamensis, is an invitation to a liturgical remembering.  A type of remembrance, that is not only a historical thought about an event that occurred, once upon a time.

Anamnesis is a lot like this: imagine a soldier is at war, and one day receives a letter from his fiancée at home.  She dabs the corner with a hint of her perfume.  When he reads the letter, she becomes so real to him, its as if she is there.  The sacraments are close to this, but even more powerful because God himself chose the symbols to become his true presence, and not merely a strong sign.

We recognize who the bread and wine symbolize and are invited into communion with Jesus, whose body was once offered on the cross to save us from our sins.  He is here present and capable of being adored and loved in the Holy Eucharist.
