Lent and Easter are full and beautiful seasons for the children and catechists of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Lent begins with the Burying of the Alleluias, where the children decorate a piece of paper with “Alleluia” on it and then “bury” them in a box. We recall that this word of praise will not be said until that great feast that we are preparing for. The materials shown during Lent include the Last Supper, where we listen intently for those special words Jesus spoke for the first time at the Passover meal; the City of Jerusalem, where we recount the last few days of Jesus’s life on earth; the parable of the Dying Seed, when Jesus told his disciples that “unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.”
Easter is celebrated with the Liturgy of Light, in which the Atrium Easter candle is prepared and the light of the risen Christ is shared with the children by giving them each a lit candle. The Alleluias are unburied and we sing many versions of Alleluia! The joy of the risen Christ is tangible in this celebration. During the season of Easter, the children are shown the Empty Tomb work and the many different elements of the sacrament of Baptism. The CGS year ends with a celebration of Pentecost.
