Call on Your Guardian Angel
By Fr. Isaiah Schick
Earlier this month, we had the feast day of all the holy Guardian Angels (October 2nd). It is one of my favorite feast days of the whole year! We are reminded that God’s creation is not limited to only what we can see but extends into the invisible spiritual realm as well. There are many more angels than there are humans, and each and every one of us has at least one guardian angel who is with us from the moment we are conceived in our mother’s womb until the moment we take our last breath and reach the judgment seat of Christ.
Our guardian angel loves us more perfectly than any living human person, as they are perfectly confirmed to the will of God and more perfectly attentive to the Heart of Jesus Christ. They have one purpose: to glorify God by helping us to become the saints we were created to be – in short, to get us to heaven! They ensure that we are NEVER alone. We have someone who loves us perfectly, always at our side, who has seen every action that we have done (for better or for worse) and who has not forgotten anything (even if we ourselves do not remember!), and yet our guardian angel loves us the more for it, not less. We think so little of them, and yet that does not make them bitter or resentful – they are not in it for themselves. They only think of the God they love and serve first of all, and of us! If you ever feel discouraged, or overwhelmed, or at the end of your rope – whether because of temptation or the sufferings of this life – don’t hesitate to ask your guardian angel for their help! They want to pray for you and your intentions, to assist you in pursuing virtue, to help you to grow closer to the Heart of Christ each and every day.
There is a short prayer that is good to commit to memory if you have not already, that helps me to call to mind my guardian angel every day – I pray it every time I get into a vehicle:
Angel of God,
my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
