Is the Chalice half empty or half full? Should we not be more concerned with the substance within? Do we thirst for it? If it is something we do not desire the amount does not matter. Thirst is defined as a feeling of needing or wanting to drink something. Desire is a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen. Both thirst and desire can be used in a physical and spiritual sense. Psalm 63 states “O God, you are my God it is you I seek! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts. In a land parched, lifeless, and without water I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. For your love is better than life; my lips shall ever praise you!” And Psalm 42 “As the deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God.”
Also, Saint Augustine’s “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You” is saying only the Living Water can quench our thirst. Now let us go to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus fell prostrate in prayer, saying, in Matthew 26: 39 “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” What cup? The cup of suffering. The price of our redemption; the Cross.
This cup that Jesus asked God to let this pass from Him is everything the sinless will suffer for the sinful. But not my will, Your will be done! Jesus our model of holiness. On the Cross Jesus says, “I thirst.” Was this His desire for souls? Is this Christ desiring and thirsting for the cup of His Father’s will? Is this how we live? Is this how we suffer? We have a tendency to pull God’s teachings and will down to our level and try to change and adapt them to fit our wants. NOPE! We must convert our hearts and seek God’s will over our own, to the example of Christ in Gethsemane. We must thirst for Him.
Remember that God thirsts for us. Think about that. For a beautiful meditation attributed to Mother Teresa on how God thirsts for us visit this site: https://avemariaradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Jesus-I-Thirst.pdf.
