Angels
Today we celebrate the Archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Did you know their names have special meanings? Michael’s name means Who Is Like God. Gabriel’s name means Strength of God. And Raphael’s name means Medicine of God. These three archangels are the only one mentioned in the Bible. Tradition has that there are more, and I am sure there are more. Also, the church considers these three archangels saints. Now that gets a bit confusing because I thought only humans became saints. But our theologians, who explain this for you, not me, teach that they are also saints.
I do know there are different types of angels. They do have a hierarchy, but each has a specific function. So, we have Seraphim and Cherubim. Powers and Thrones and Dominions. And Archangels and Angels. It is in the angel group that the church teaches that we all have a Guardian Angel to watch over us.
All angels are pure spirit. They have nothing like a body like ours. However, our souls are spirit, so we have something in spirit like the angels. Angels can have an impact on our lives. They urge us to have thoughts, plant suggestions in our minds, and teach us not to be afraid. For example, if you are to deal with someone that is not friendly toward you it is a good idea to ask your Guardian Angel to speak with their Guardian Angel. It is surprising how well this works.
One last thought, when was the last time you invoked your Guardian Angel?
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God’s love commits me here.
Ever this day be at my side,
To light and guard, rule and guide. Amen
May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
