Stop Their Increase

Joseph has moved his family down to Egypt because of the famine. Joseph has died, but his family, blessed by God has been fruitful and over the years has multiplied. The Egyptians, fearing the Hebrew people will become more numerous enslave the Hebrew people. They also demand that any male children born be thrown into the river and killed. Does this seem cruel? It is a method that has been used for thousands of centuries. When the controlling group of people feel threatened by foreigners or immigrants, we work to take away their dignity, make them less than human and treat them as animals. We also try to control their population. Our fear drives us to be cruel and inhuman leaders. It does not matter who the leaders are, but do you not recognize the pattern being played out again at our borders? There is a lot of accusations, finger pointing, and labeling, but it does not matter. That is not the problem.

The problem is God has been taken out of our way of thinking and acting. God’s commandment to us has always been to help the widow and the orphan, to take care of one another. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We have never given God’s plan a try. Instead, we develop fears about what will happen if we do not control the influx of people or stop their increase. I have noticed that whenever people are in control, we just make matters worse. I wonder if we ever will give God’s plan due justice.

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
