Walking With Jesus
In the first reading, Peter is explaining to the religious leaders that all their leaders lived and died. You even have their graves identified. This is how Jesus is different.
In the gospel He explains how the Scriptures describe Jesus and how He must suffer and die for us. In all of history there has never been a leader like Jesus where the prophecies about His birth, death, and resurrection are listed. Jesus fulfills all the prophecies. No other worldly prophet has ever had prophecies about their lives. No one has ever fulfilled these prophecies except Jesus.
What did Jesus say to men on the road to Emmaus? The prophecies related to him. And how He fulfills those prophecies.
I can imagine that as they walked, and Jesus begins to speak, their hearts begin to beat faster. They are thinking yes! Yes! This is what Jesus did! How wonderful! This has never happened before.
Of course, they ask Jesus to stay with them. And then Jesus celebrates Mass. He takes bread and says this is my body. And he takes the cup of wine and says that this is my blood. Then He disappears. Or, does He?
Is He not present in the bread and the wine? Has not the bread and wine changed into His body and blood? Now think with me. Did His disciples recognize Jesus when He disappeared? Or do they recognize the real presence of Jesus in the consecrated bread and wine? And if that is true, He never disappeared because He is truly present in the consecrated bread and wine. Truly the greatest miracle of all.
May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
