The Bread of Life
The Jewish leaders were demanding a sign from Jesus, a specific sign. They had come to believe that when the Messiah comes he would give them bread from heaven just as Moses had. If they were to accept Jesus they would want him to give them bread just like Moses. Jesus would have to correct them.
First, it was not Moses who gave them bread. It was God. Second, the bread given them at that time would spoil and decay. Third, that bread was only a foreshadowing of the true bread, the bread to be given us, Jesus Himself.
The bread that Jesus gives to us is the bread of eternal life. All of this was shocking to the people listening. We listen with ears that know of the wisdom of the resurrection. I wonder how we would have reacted not knowing of the resurrection?
There are many people in the world today who do not know of the resurrection. Jesus instructs us to be His witnesses. For all of you who received Holy Communion last Sunday, you are the bread now from heaven. Go out and demonstrate the sign of God’s love to all.
May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
