Humble

Great job! Way to go! Your performance was outstanding! That was awesome!

I have worked with many people on many different projects over the years. I have seen some amazing accomplishments. People just doing outstanding work. And I have heard the compliments, and well-deserved compliments at that, too. Our culture has changed over the years, too. We hand out compliments readily and with little thought. Was the result really that great that it deserves a compliment? Sometimes I wonder. Are we building self-confidence in someone? Or are we granting compliments with the hope some of the glory slides off on ourselves?

Each situation is different and needs to be evaluated upon its own merit. Still, there are compliments that when I hear them, I take notice. The compliment I rarely hear is, “You are such a humble person.”

Has anyone ever said that of you? If not, why not? And if they did, how did that make you feel? Many of us have the perception that we are humble – somewhat, right? But humble so much that someone notices? In that sense of wondering if someone notices your humbleness might not be humbleness at all.

Of course, the other side is if someone says you are humble how did you respond? How does a humble person respond? Does a truly humble person even respond? Think about that for a moment. When’s the last time someone said you were a humble person? During Lent we are told to walk humbly with God.

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
