Celebrating A Marriage

Today we celebrate the Annunciation of the Lord. Specifically, this is a marriage of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. Through the humanity of Mary and the divinity of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is formed and prepared for His mission to save humanity. The Annunciation is a special solemnity in the Church. We recognize that our God became man, one of us. Both fully human and fully divine.

This is important to us because it demonstrates the love our God has for us; how intimate He desires to be with each of us. Without this relationship to God there is no salvation. God planned for humanity to be with Him for eternity. It is through our sin that we have separated ourselves from God. It will take a sacrifice to redeem us, to bring us back to God. God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son – that we be redeemed.

This is our faith. This is the faith we profess every Sunday when we proclaim the Creed. Our God is present to us as the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This should be a day where you take some time to reflect upon this event.

An angel appearing to Mary. Be not afraid, Mary. You are full of grace. The Spirit will overshadow you and you will conceive and bear a son. His name shall be Emmanuel, God with us. So profound and such a mystery!

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
