Signs

As we get older, signs become more important. Take any road trip and one of the signs you always watch for are the Roadside stops signs. You mentally determine where you are and where the next sign for the next stop is. The key point here is your eyes are open. You are paying attention. You trust the sign.

In the gospel today, the Jewish leaders do not want to see the sign. Rather than accepting the truth in front of them, they are seeking what they want to find. You see, they had an image of what the messiah should be, how the messiah will act, and what they can expect to be rewarded for their service in the temple.

They do not want to see the messiah that came. The messiah who told people that they would have to be more righteous than the Pharisees and the scribes. The messiah that associated with sinners. The messiah who offered us eternal life.

People ask God for signs even today. Let me know you are there, God. They want a god that they have conceived in their mind. Not the God that says we are to follow the commandments, live the beatitudes, and help each other to enter into eternal life with the Father. No, they want something here on this earth, some material possession that wears out and is quite quickly forgotten.

Jesus has entered your heart. Turn to Him with trust and confidence. The sign desired is His love for you. He, in turn, desires your love.

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen
