The Courage to Hear God’s Word

Our Protestant sisters and brothers like to proclaim that everything must come from the Bible. They call it faith alone. But in Revelation today we also hear that we will be judged on our deeds. It is more than just faith alone but must include what we have done and will do.

We listen to a very descriptive rendering of what John’s vision of heaven is. You get a sense of the majesty, the greatness, the total power of God. And John writes in such a manner that you get the feeling that you want to stand up and be a part of this beautiful world. And rightly so. Through baptism we are children of God. And it is exciting to imagine this eternal life we have been promised. It is imagery like this that encourages us to go out and share the good news of Jesus.

But life does not always let us rest on that mountain of the Lord. We need to deal with everything happening around us down here in the valley. Rather than asking God to put us on the mountain we need to pray for the courage just to stand today and hear God’s Word. The wisdom that what we do today has an impact on those around us and the outcome of eternal life for us. The ability to discern God’s Will for our life. The humility to offer who we are to God as a gift of self.

Pray for those who are sick and need healing.

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
