Jerusalem was destroyed the first time because they would not accept the message of Jeremiah. Now Jesus foretells is destruction to come about in 70 A.D. because they will not accept Him.
What is the message for us today? A hint from the first reading. We, who have accepted Christ, are we willing to stand up for our faith and be faithful to God? It takes courage to live up to the values and morals of our faith as we so often must do in this culture. We are countercultural, just as Jesus is. Just as Mattathias was, but I would suggest we do not go to the lengths he did. But he did take on the authorities and would not give up his faith.
Jesus wept when He looked over Jerusalem because He knew what was in the future for them. And His human side realized the tragedy and pain people would suffer.
We weep for family members and friends who have turned away from the faith or have left the faith. This is when we need to turn to Jesus in prayer and fasting. Prayer because it is our only means of voicing our concern to a loving God. Fasting to demonstrate just how sincere we are that we want others to return to the faith. God will then use our offering to work miracles. We are to keep inviting, but not forcing or arguing. Offer them up to the Lord for His care.
May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
