The Sabbath

Jesus cures the woman of a back ailment that she has had for eighteen years. But, according to the Pharisees, how dare he do this healing on the Sabbath. Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. In other words, it makes sense to do some form of work on the Sabbath, but what? People will argue just like the Pharisees that God worked for six days and then rested.

Now we need to figure out what work is. Was it work for God to Will into existence creation? Did He even break a sweat? God gave us the pattern of creation because we would have to work by the sweat of our brow. As humans we need a break. Now one more thought about God resting. If God ever stopped thinking of us we would not exist. There would not even be a puff of smoke. And do not worry about your family mourning you not being here because there would not be any memory of you.

No, God continues in the process of creation all the time. So that means for our human Sabbath we need a special time to reflect and meditate on God. We still need to do our daily activities to live. And for some that means working at gas stations, grocery stores, and other things so you can have your Sabbath. Next time you have to pick up something from a store on the Sabbath thank those people working who are making a sacrifice for you.

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
