Doers of the Word

(For the children’s mass.)

I wonder how I am to be a doer of the word of God. I suppose I could say I will do what God wants me to do. But then I wonder what it is that God wants me to do? I am not always sure. I know I should say my prayers. I know I should be polite and kind to others. I know I should be respectful and considerate toward other people. I should take care of the things God has given me. But how do we learn to do these things?

I remember when I was in school. One teacher had a very special way of teaching. She would hand out our books. Then we would place them carefully on our desks. Next, she would tell us to put our hands on the books. Then we were to close our eyes. She would tell us to think very hard about the book in front of us. Then she would tell us to slowly lift our hands up. To our surprise the book would rise off the desk and stick to our hands. Then, even with our eyes closed, we would see a lightning bolt and hear thunder and immediately everything in the book was now in our minds. Wouldn’t that be a great way to learn? (I would then ask the children if any believed me?)

Yes, I know this is impossible. But then we say nothing is impossible for God. God has a special way to teaching us. It is through the sacraments.

In baptism we touched our souls with grace that left a mark on our souls just as if it were touched by a lightning bolt. God gave us parents to teach us. So, day by day they continue to teach us right from wrong. How to do things with kindness and patience. They have an important job to do. Every day we learn something about God when we pray, when we come to Mass, when we show kindness and forgiveness to others. It is like a book. We start with page 1 and as we learn we go to the next page. As we grow up, we live each the day the best we can by being doers. Today is just starting. What good thing will you do today?

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
