As Samuel was growing up, he would have had his regular chores and duties. His mentor, Eli was growing old and blind. The fact that Samuel ran three times to Eli thinking Eli had called him demonstrates Samuel’s desire to serve, to be available to Eli’s needs. Eli realizing God is calling Samuel now redirects Samuel’s desire to serve to God.

Here I am, Lord. Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. Samuel’s original focus was entirely on Eli. Now he is focused on God. The noise of the world often drowns out God’s call to us. We sometimes do not recognize His voice. We think we are doing the right thing but sometimes go down the wrong path. However, if we hold that sense of wanting to be available to the Lord, He will guide us and lead us in the right direction.

Jesus was in a spiritual battle constantly. Healing so many people. Curing their lameness, restoring sight, casting out demons. He was in constant demand. Even when tired and wanting to sleep, He would still make Himself available to others in need. Notice though He did take time to pray.

It is prayer that refreshes us, gives us new energy even when exhausted. Prayer opens our hearts and minds to be available to God. Following God’s will allow us to be available to others, but it also nourishes our human nature. Can we surrender ourselves to His Will?

May the Lord bless you in the name of the Father and if the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
